The Internetworked Systems Lab (InterSys - officially appears as Programming and Information Processing Lab*) is the sole laboratory of the Software and Applications Division of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, in Democritus University of Thrace. It is directed by Prof. V. Tsaoussidis and consists of 4 faculty members and several research associates - typically research or teaching contractors as well as postdocs and Ph.D students. The Lab secured funding that exceeded 5 million Euros and coordinated European research projects that exceeded 12 million Euros - the largest European research funding among Democritus University Labs. It is located in Xanthi, Greece, in an area of 300m2, including facilities in Kimmeria and City Center. The research agenda of the InterSys Lab spans across several networking layers, including transport, network, link and middleware. Research topics include Next Generation Internet, Delay-tolerant Networking (DTN), Information-Centric Networking, Blockchains, Trust, design and evaluation of transport protocols, routing and transport for disruptive networks, mechanisms for quality of service, congestion control and reliability. The research interests of the Lab also include security, algorithms, programming languages, and information retrieval. Applications that may benefit from our research effort include Internet of Things, energy-saving protocols and mobile devices, multimedia communications, space communications, Cloud and Web Computing, High Performance Internetworked Systems, and the Internet. Within this context, the Lab accommodates several research units including:
- Protocols for Internetworking (including Space Internetworking Center) directed by V. Tsaoussidis
- Algorithms and Privacy Unit, directed by P. Efraimidis
- Information Retrieval Unit, directed by A. Arampatzis
- Cloud Computing - directed by Eli Katsiri
The lab undertook important assignements, including the construction of a Testbed for the European Space Agency, the Construction of Space Data Routers as well as the establishment of Space Internetworking Center. The Lab enjoyed important publicity given the succesful deployment of its protocols - along with NASA's ION protocol stack - into SPACE including the International Space Agency and other upcoming missions. Several Ph.D and Master students have been graduated from the Lab, most of those have a very successful career, with posts worldwide either as faculty members [e.g. UCL, UoM, University of Hannover, etc.] or as scientists in organizations such as Amazon, European Patent Office, SkyNews etc. Lab members often collaborate with local ATHENA Research Center, which has facilities in the university campus.
* The academic decision ot the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Univeristy Senate to change the Lab name was not yet reflected in a relevant govermental document (FEK).
